Mercury Introduces Its Biggest Outboard Yet
The Mercury Racing 400R joined the Verado 350 and stern-drive 1550 in Miami.
Between a media event Wednesday night before the
Miami International Boat Show opened on Feb. 12 and the press conference Thursday morning,
Mercury Marine and
Mercury Racing
debuted 2,300 horsepower in the form of new-model introductions. On the
outboard side, Mercury Racing pulled the sheet off its new 400 hp
supercharged six-cylinder motor, the 400R. The consumer version of the
engine, the Verado 350, is a Mercury Marine offering. Both versions of
the motor share features including a cool-air intake and electronic
boost pressure control plus multiport fuel injection. Displacement for
the outboards is 2.6 liters and recommended fuel is 91 octane. The 400R
comes with an Offshore HD Sport Master gear case, and the engines
feature Mercury’s Joystick Piloting. Each series of motors comes in a
variety of colors.
On the stern-drive side, Mercury Racing presented the new 1550, which
features dual calibration from an electronic key fob. Using the fob — a
USB drive, really — to manage the engine’s advanced control system,
operators can switch between a 1,350 hp engine that runs great on 91
octane fuel, and a 1,550 hp beast burning 112 AKI race fuel. Both fuel
calibrations provide maximum torque and efficiency. The 552 cid engine
features sequential fuel injection with a Mercury Racing Dry-Sump
Hydraulic transmission and Dry Sump M8R drive.
